World Environment Day at Koni High School

On the 5th of June, this year's "World Environment Day" was celebrated in Koni's Govt. High School by ca. 125 pupils and the responsible teachers of the school as well as several FSL volunteers and staff members.
The day begun with a few short speeches given by FSL staff members, the volunteers involved in the previous summer camp at the school and the headmaster. The speakers treated topics like this year's theme "Think - Eat - Save" (involving things like agriculture, food production and refining as well as water and soil pollution), the declining stock of fish in the waters around Kundapura and general problems like global warming.

Ferdinand, a volunteer from Germany and Austin received small mementos on behalf of the other volunteers helping out in the summer camp and of FSL India respectively. The headmaster expressed his appreciation of FSL's efforts at his school.

The program was followed by the planting of more than 30 young trees and smaller seedlings such as ashoka trees, ayurvedic plants, jackfruits and mangoes. This took the whole team another two hours, after which a group photo was taken and the grounds were finished off.
All in all, it has been a great day for Kundapura's and Koni's environment and lots of fun for students, volunteers and teachers alike.
