Transect Walk in Kharvikeri

On October 10th, the Ecoteam went on a transect walk in the Kharvikeri area located in northeastern Kundapura. The team interviewed the local residents on environmental matters and their current waste management system.

Unfortunately, the privately organized waste collection system is facing huge difficulties at the moment which lead to an increase in waste collection fees of roughly 50%. As a result, many people have stopped cooperating with the trash-collectors and choose to burn their waste or dump it into the nearby river.

The current situation is very dangerous considering the fact that the village lives off the returns of fishing in that very river.

Furthermore, the team also went to an island in the middle of the river to further investigate the current level of pollution. Even on this remote island a car tyre, a rotten fishing net made of polyester and many kinds of bottles, both PET and glass were found.
