Survey and PRA at Mavinkaru village

Mavinkaru is a village, which is situated in western ghat, near to Kollur, We read the article which was published in Vijay Karnataka about Mavinkaru Village after reading article we were surprised that village didn't have a basic facilities like transportation, Electricity supply, Primary care center, higher education facilities etc...

This village located 6 km away from Kollur, here village people have other big problems like village is located in dense forest and during night time they could not come to go city in emergency time or in generally, they have to be in home before get dark. In monsoon season there is massive problem of leeches. After knowing this all information we were very curies and excited to see the village. With this regard we decided to visit the village on the 25th November 2013. FSL-India's HBP team Mr. Vijay Kumar, Mr. Austin , Ms. Manjula and international volunteers Ms. Romy and Mr. Mortiz when we reached Mastikatte which is entrance bus-stop of Mavinkaru village there we met villages leaders and had warm welcome from them.

While walking in we observed that village people are fortunate because they have a good water source, which always flow in waster ghat, this way we can say that village people are lucky. We visited some of households and gathered information about village but to get more glance of the village.

To understand the situation of village we have been conducted PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) exercise and conducted village survey. During PRA exercise we got to know the map of village, details of household, resources, educational status, population, problem like Health, Electricity, education etc..

In village there were 65 families and population is 600, male- 350 and Female-250, there main occupation is Agriculture, basket making and main crop is Paddy, cashew-nut and arecanut and it is a main income sources for them but after cultivation its very difficult to transport to paddy to mill or market because there is no road facility, there major crop is paddy after harvest they have to carry manually to mill, because of no road facility.

We discussed and observed that in the village people belief in God, they built 3 temples in village called Shri Jain Jattigeswara Parivar, Shri Yakshi., Shri Shastara Brahma temple, they are believing is God is protecting from Wilde animals and give crop in cultivation. Their believing, if anything can change it happen only from God blessing.

Fortunately they have very good water source, but there is no proper storage facility to use water for cultivation. If there is a check-dam / channel its help for agriculture lot by providing water throughout the years. Wildlife act -1972 is a problem, because Kollur is Reserve forest area, forest department is not allowing to have a electricity supply. Intervention SKDRDP helped village people for create awareness / knowledge and financial support through SHG's.
